Hot stamping foil, also known as hot foil, is a multi-layer transfer film widely used in printing and packaging decoration. Its structure consists of a PET carrier film, release layer, color or metallized layer, and heat-activated adhesive layer. The transfer process relies on a heated metal die. Under controlled heat and pressure, the adhesive layer melts, separating the decorative layer from the carrier and bonding it firmly onto substrates such as paper, cardboard, plastic and leather. The leftover carrier film is peeled away after stamping.
This dry finishing method needs no ink. It delivers sharp edges, rich metallic luster, matte textures or holographic effects. Hot stamping foil can even create subtle embossed tactile effects when combined with embossing dies. It offers outstanding abrasion resistance and stable color performance, making it the preferred choice for high-end packaging, book covers, gift boxes and premium labels.
Its main limitation comes from tooling. Custom engraved dies increase setup cost and preparation time, so it works best for short and medium print runs. Hot stamping foil adapts well to textured and uncoated stocks, which is a key advantage over cold foil. Designers choose this material when they seek luxurious tactile quality and reliable performance on complex substrates.
