Efficient Inline Metallic Finishing Solution

Cold foil is a modern transfer film that creates metallic graphics without heat or engraved dies. The whole process runs inline on offset, flexo or web printing presses. First, UV-curable adhesive is printed onto the substrate following the artwork shape. Then the cold foil roll contacts the adhesive under pressure. UV light instantly cures the adhesive, locking the metallic layer to the printed area. Unused foil peels off and rewinds, leaving clean metallic patterns.

One core advantage of cold foil is cost efficiency. No custom metal dies are required, cutting tooling expenses and setup time. Production speed is much higher than hot stamping, ideal for medium and large volume orders. Since cold foil can accept CMYK overprint directly on the metallic surface, designers can generate diverse metallic hues from a base silver foil in one continuous press run.

Cold foil performs best on smooth coated papers and films. Porous or heavily textured substrates may weaken adhesion and uniformity. It is widely adopted for beverage labels, cosmetic cartons and mass consumer packaging. While it lacks the tactile deboss effect of hot foil, its inline workflow and flexible color overprint capability make it a practical option for commercial print projects requiring consistent metallic decoration.
